NAMA 2017 nominations received with mixed feelings

The National arts Merit Awards received excitement and profound distaste soon after release of NAMA 2017 nominees yesterday.  Art practitioners and fans from various parts of the country took to social media to express disappointment bringing to question criteria used to select those who will be honored for milestone achievement during the award ceremony slated for February 18, at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe promises fire works for this year’s awards and adjudicators have applauded the geographic spread of entries across all genres and quality of artworks, despite limited resources although revelations in a statement issued by NACZ spokesperson, Catherine Mthombeni that music videos directed by foreigners were not eligible for NAMA left many with their jaws dropped to the floor trying to bring question to reason 0n how this affects Zimbabweans abroad and investment made in videos filmed abroad to bring face to Zimbabwe arts will amount to nothing but loss of recognition during the “Prestigious awards’.

A press release sites, adjudication was based on submitted entries also  adjudicators sited mediocrity and lack of originality resulted in a handful of submissions being relegated for award consideration. However it is a notable concern despite any appraisal of standards a fore mentioned, that NAMA entries have dropped from 11o4 to 775 entries this year. Which bears clear testimony how the relationship between NAMA and arts practitioners currently stands. See full list of the nominees below:
